Paul leads way to the IT fast lane
Villages campaign for broadband link
by Jonathan Goode
A CAMPAIGN has been launched to bring broadband technology to villages
bypassed by the information superhighway.
Chartered accountant, finance and IT manager Paul Tate from Hanwell,
started the Broadband 4 Wroxton campaign in a bid to get the BT exchange
serving Hanwell, Horley, Wroxton, Balscote, North Newington and Drayton,
upgraded.
If he can get enough people to register and back this up with enough
advance orders, the move would mean improved internet access for hundreds
of people.
Mr Tate said: "If there is sufficient demand, BT will review the exchange
and look at how much it would cost to upgrade.
“I launched the campaign because I rely on the internet for a great deal
of my work. I used to use BT Anytime service but was told I was spending
too much time on the internet to continue.
"With broadband the access is open all the time."
A website, at www.broadband4wroxton.org.uk, is helping to publicise the
scheme and collect registrations to submit to BT via various Internet
Service Providers (ISPs).
Broadband is simply a fast connection to the internet that is always on.
It means users don't need to dial up every time they want to view a
website or collect emails.
The extra band width means that files, such as images, videos, music
tracks and animations can be download much more quickly - up to 40 times
faster than with a standard modem.
In June this year, after updating 1,115 of the country's major telephone
exchanges, BT Wholesale announced a scheme for telephone customers linked
to the smaller exchanges to influence the next phase of broadband
roll-out.
This is being done via a registration scheme through which customers can
register their interest with Internet Service Providers who in turn
register with BT.
So called `trigger levels' for the most popular exchanges have been set.
Once advance orders of 75 per cent are achieved, the trigger level will
upgrade them.
Over the last few months BT has announced trigger levels for 693 exchanges
varying between 200 and 400 orders.
Mr Tate said: "I have started dropping leaflets at houses in some of the
villages and already have some responses.
"More sponsors to print leaflets and volunteers to distribute them are
needed so we can get broadband up and running as quickly as possible."
The Broadband 4 Wroxton campaign is for residents covered by the Wroxton
St Mary telephone exchange. Telephone numbers for the exchange should
start 01295 73xxxx.
